Recommended vitamin D intakes

Population group Recommendations
Breastfed babies from birth to one year of age 8.5-10 μg a day all year round
Babies from birth to one year of age fed infant formula until they are receiving more than 500 ml (about a pint) of infant formula  

No supplementation

Children aged 1 to 4 years old 10 μg per day all year round
General population:

– children aged 5 to 18 years old

– adults, including

– pregnant and breastfeeding women

 

 

10 μg per day in the autumn and winter

At risk groups:

– individuals with darker skins who cannot synthesise vitamin D efficiently from the UK’s relatively weak

northern sunlight;

– individuals who cover their skin whilst outdoors;

– individuals with minimal exposure to sunlight.

Public Health England recommends that for the majority of the population, vitamin D supplementation is only essential in the autumn and winter. Excessive intakes of vitamin D can be harmful and therefore the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) made the following determinations for total safe intake levels of vitamin D in different population groups:

Adults,

–      Including pregnant and breastfeeding women.
